A perfect 2-day Amboseli weekend
Amboseli is one of Kenya's crown jewels. On a clear morning, Kilimanjaro fills the horizon while elephants drift across the salt flats below. Getting there, however, is where many trips go wrong — a cramped matatu, a breakdown on the Emali road, or arriving three hours late to find your lodge has released your room.
Here's how to do it right.
Day 1: Nairobi → Amboseli
Leave Nairobi by 6:00 AM to beat traffic through Athi River and Machakos Town. The drive is roughly 4 hours in a comfortable vehicle — plan to arrive at the park gates around 10:00 AM, which gives you a full morning game drive before the midday heat.
What to look for on arrival:
- Elephant herds near Observation Hill
- Cape buffalo near the Enkongo Narok swamp
- Flamingos at the seasonal lake (Jan–Mar)
Day 2: Sunrise drive + return
A 5:30 AM wake-up call is worth it. The light is extraordinary, big cats are still active, and you'll have the tracks almost to yourself. Aim to leave by 10:00 AM to be back in Nairobi before rush hour.
Why the drive matters
A tired driver on a dirt road is a risk you don't need to take on holiday. Wimpy Drive's Coaster and Land Cruiser fleet comes with experienced safari drivers who know the Amboseli roads, the gates, and exactly where to position the vehicle for that Kilimanjaro photograph.
